It's not so clear that the study was done poorly. This article doesn't present the data in any usable way. I would be interested to see a table of the views, IQ, and education level of the participants so we could tell whether your buddy's concerns have merit. Also, the article doesn't say how they categorized people as "progressives." I hope it involved more issues than views on single mothers and acceptance of "less traditional moral values." Whatever that means.
